Soil Testing & Nutrient Management
Learn how to assess soil health and make informed crop nutrition decisions. Understand soil sampling, physical and chemical properties, pH, EC, organic matter, major and micronutrients, soil-test interpretation, fertilizer recommendations and integrated nutrient management. Develop practical skills for agriculture, horticulture, nurseries, landscaping and crop advisory services.
Level 03 – AIA. Agricultural Industry Advanced Certification Courses. Advanced Industry Skills for Agriculture & Horticulture Students.
In 1.5 months you learn a practical workflow from representative soil sampling through reading test results and preparing advisory notes. The focus is on interpreting pH, salinity, organic matter, and nutrient status so you can support crop, nursery, and landscape nutrition decisions responsibly.
Module 1: Soil Health Basics & Sampling Protocol
- Why soil testing supports crop, nursery, and landscape decisions
- Divide fields or beds into uniform sampling units
- Collect composite samples with correct depth and tools
- Label, dry, and dispatch samples for laboratory analysis
Module 2: Physical Properties & Field Observation
- Texture, structure, and drainage indicators in the field
- Signs of compaction, erosion, and poor infiltration
- Link physical conditions to root growth and water movement
- Record field notes alongside lab submissions
Module 3: pH, EC & Organic Matter
- Interpret soil reaction (pH) for common crops and ornamentals
- Read electrical conductivity (EC) as a salinity indicator
- Use organic-matter results to judge soil fertility and structure
- Suggest liming, leaching, or organic amendments at concept level
Module 4: Major & Micronutrients
- Roles of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and secondary nutrients
- Recognise deficiency and toxicity symptoms in the field
- Read micronutrient levels on standard soil reports
- Avoid blanket fertilisation without test evidence
Module 5: Soil-Test Interpretation & Recommendations
- Match report values to crop- or landscape-specific guidelines
- Prepare balanced fertilizer suggestions from test results
- Plan split applications and timing by growth stage
- Communicate recommendations clearly to farmers or clients
Module 6: Integrated Nutrient Management & Advisory Practice
- Combine organic manures, fertilizers, and crop residues in a plan
- Monitor response and plan re-testing intervals
- Adapt advice for nurseries, orchards, and planted landscapes
- Maintain advisory records for traceability and follow-up
