Precision Farming & Sensor-Based Agriculture
Develop next-generation skills in data-driven and technology-enabled agriculture. Learn precision agriculture concepts, field data collection, sensors, GPS, variable-rate management, crop monitoring and smart decision-making. This course prepares students to understand how modern technology can improve productivity, reduce input costs and support efficient management of commercial agricultural operations.
You work through precision farming as a workflow: map fields, collect GPS-linked samples, interpret sensor and imagery layers, and turn data into variable-rate seed, fertiliser, or irrigation decisions. Training stays practical—spreadsheets, maps, and handheld tools—so you can support better input use on farms, horticulture blocks, and large landscape or plantation sites.
Level 02 – Primary Courses. High-Demand Career Skills.
Module 1: Precision Agriculture Concepts & Field Zones
- Define management zones by soil, slope, and historical yield
- Link zone maps to input and scouting plans
- Compare uniform vs variable-rate application benefits
- Set realistic data goals for small and medium farms
Module 2: GPS, Mapping & Spatial Records
- Capture boundary and feature points with a GPS or mobile app
- Build simple field maps with layers for crops and infrastructure
- Geotag soil or tissue sample locations for repeat visits
- Export maps for team briefings and season archives
Module 3: Soil & Crop Sensors, Sampling & Scouting
- Grid or zone-sample soil for pH, nutrients, and organic matter
- Use handheld meters and canopy sensors where available
- Walk scouting routes and record pest, weed, and stress notes with location
- Store readings in tables ready for map overlay
Module 4: Remote Sensing & Crop Health Indicators
- Interpret NDVI or colour-index maps for vigour differences
- Time satellite or drone passes with crop growth stages
- Ground-truth weak zones before input changes
- Archive imagery by date for season comparison
Module 5: Variable-Rate & Prescription Planning
- Draft variable-rate fertiliser maps from soil test results
- Adjust seed or planting density by zone where equipment allows
- Align irrigation shifts with mapped moisture or stress zones
- Document expected input savings and follow-up checks
Module 6: Data Review, Decisions & Season Reporting
- Merge yield, input, and weather notes into a season summary
- Identify zones that underperformed and plan retests
- Present maps and charts for farm management review
- Update zone boundaries for the next crop cycle
