Mushroom Production & Commercial Cultivation

Mushroom Production & Commercial Cultivation

Learn the practical fundamentals of commercial mushroom cultivation and enterprise management. Cover mushroom biology, species selection, substrate preparation, spawn, cultivation environment, hygiene, crop management, harvesting, post-harvest handling, packaging and marketing. Develop practical skills to establish and manage a small or commercial mushroom production unit.

Level 03 – AIA. Agricultural Industry Advanced Certification Courses. Advanced Industry Skills for Agriculture & Horticulture Students.

In one intensive month you learn a repeatable workflow for edible mushroom production suited to small units and growing commercial demand in India. Training emphasises clean substrate preparation, controlled growing conditions, and safe harvest and packaging—starting with widely cultivated species such as oyster and button mushroom before comparing other options for your locality.

Module 1: Mushroom Biology & Species Selection

  • Understand fungal life cycle, spawn, and fruiting body development
  • Compare oyster, button, and other species for climate, skill, and market
  • Choose strains and spawn from reliable suppliers with viability checks
  • Plan production calendar around temperature and humidity in your region

Module 2: Substrate Preparation & Spawning

  • Prepare paddy straw, compost, or supplemented substrates as required by species
  • Pasteurise or sterilise substrate to reduce competitor moulds and bacteria
  • Inoculate with spawn under hygienic conditions and label batches
  • Incubate bags or trays until mycelium fully colonises the substrate

Module 3: Growing Environment & Hygiene

  • Maintain temperature, humidity, ventilation, and light for fruiting
  • Design simple grow rooms or polyhouse sections for year-round trials
  • Follow footbaths, tool disinfection, and worker hygiene protocols
  • Separate clean, incubation, and harvesting areas to limit contamination

Module 4: Crop Management & Harvesting

  • Monitor pinhead formation and adjust air exchange and misting
  • Identify contamination early and remove affected units safely
  • Harvest at the correct size and stage for maximum shelf life
  • Record flush yields and substrate performance for each batch

Module 5: Post-Harvest, Packaging & Unit Basics

  • Cool, trim, and pack mushrooms in ventilated containers for local sale
  • Follow food safety and personal hygiene during handling
  • Outline costs for substrate, spawn, utilities, and labour per kg produced
  • Plan waste substrate use as compost or garden mulch where feasible

Who This Is For

Minimum 12th pass or equivalent. Suitable for agriculture and horticulture students, rural and urban entrepreneurs, homemakers exploring home-based units, farmers seeking off-season income, and anyone ready to work in a clean, disciplined production environment. Basic literacy for record-keeping is helpful; prior mushroom experience is not required.

Outcomes

On completion, you should be able to:

  • Select mushroom species and spawn suited to your facility and market
  • Prepare and inoculate substrate with standard hygiene practices
  • Manage incubation and fruiting conditions for reliable flushes
  • Harvest, pack, and store mushrooms for short-distance supply
  • Draft a simple plan for a small mushroom production unit or pilot batch
