Hydroponics & Soilless Farming Technology
Master modern soilless cultivation and controlled-environment farming techniques. Learn hydroponic systems, nutrient management, water quality, crop selection, propagation, system maintenance, pest management and commercial production. Develop practical skills to establish and manage hydroponic farms, urban farming projects and modern agriculture ventures with efficient use of water and space.
This course teaches you to design, start, and maintain soilless farms: NFT, DWC, Dutch bucket, and vertical tower setups for leafy greens, herbs, and selected fruiting crops. You practise measuring water quality, mixing nutrient solutions, managing pH and EC, propagating seedlings, and troubleshooting pumps, leaks, and root health in small commercial or urban installations.
Level 02 – Primary Courses. High-Demand Career Skills.
Module 1: Soilless Farming Concepts & System Types
- Compare NFT, DWC, substrate, and vertical systems for space and crop
- List components: reservoir, pump, delivery line, support, and drainage
- Estimate water and power use for a starter unit
- Choose crops suited to local market and system depth
Module 2: Water Quality, pH & Nutrient Solutions
- Test source water for pH, EC, and common impurities
- Mix stock solutions and working batches to target EC ranges
- Adjust pH with acids or bases and log changes over time
- Refresh nutrient solution on a schedule based on crop uptake
Module 3: Propagation, Transplanting & Crop Scheduling
- Germinate seeds or root cuttings in sterile media
- Harden seedlings before moving into active hydroponic channels
- Space plants for light penetration and airflow in vertical racks
- Stagger planting dates for continuous harvest of leafy crops
Module 4: System Installation & Daily Operation
- Level channels and set flow rate for NFT or return timing for DWC
- Check pumps, timers, and float valves on a daily walk-through
- Clean filters and remove algae from exposed surfaces
- Record solution temperature, EC, and pH in a logbook or sheet
Module 5: Plant Health, Root Zone & Environment
- Inspect roots for colour, odour, and signs of oxygen stress
- Manage light intensity and photoperiod for vegetative growth
- Control humidity to reduce foliar disease in enclosed units
- Isolate affected plants and sanitise equipment after outbreaks
Module 6: Harvest, Food Safety & Commercial Basics
- Harvest leafy crops at correct size for retail or kitchen use
- Wash, dry, and pack produce with batch labels
- Calculate cost per kilogram including nutrient, power, and labour
- Plan expansion or crop change using simple yield records
