Irrigation System Design & Drip Installation
Develop practical skills in designing, installing and managing modern irrigation systems. Learn drip and sprinkler systems, water requirement calculation, pipe and emitter selection, filtration, fertigation, layout planning, installation, testing and maintenance. Gain hands-on knowledge applicable to farms, nurseries, landscapes, greenhouses and commercial horticulture projects.
Level 04 – AELP. Agriculture Experiential Learning Program. Practical, Project-Based and Experiential Skill Training.
This experiential one-month program focuses on micro-irrigation as used across Indian farms, orchards, nurseries, and landscape projects—especially drip systems supported by government micro-irrigation schemes where eligible. You learn to calculate water needs, select emitters and laterals, install filtration and fertigation, and keep systems running efficiently in variable water-quality conditions.
Module 1: Irrigation Principles & Crop Water Needs
- Relate evapotranspiration, crop stage, and soil type to irrigation scheduling
- Compare surface, sprinkler, and drip methods for water-use efficiency
- Read basic field data: flow rate, pressure, and wetting patterns
- Align irrigation blocks with crop, topography, and power availability
Module 2: Drip Components & Material Selection
- Choose mainline, sub-main, laterals, and emitters for crop spacing
- Size pipes for acceptable pressure loss and uniform delivery
- Select control valves, air vents, and flush points for maintenance
- Match system capacity to pump and filter performance
Module 3: Filtration, Water Quality & Fertigation
- Install screen, disc, or sand filters suited to source water sediment load
- Prevent emitter clogging from algae, iron, and chemical precipitation
- Inject fertilizers through venturi or fertilizer tanks with safe mixing
- Flush lines on schedule and after fertigation events
Module 4: Layout Design & Hydraulic Planning
- Draw field layouts with manifolds, sub-units, and valve stations
- Place laterals and emitters for uniform root-zone wetting
- Plan head control, pressure regulation, and zone isolation
- Adapt designs for orchard rows, vegetable beds, and nursery benches
Module 5: Installation, Testing & Commissioning
- Lay mains and laterals with correct depth, alignment, and fittings
- Pressure-test lines and correct leaks before crop connection
- Check emitter discharge across the block and adjust as needed
- Hand over as-built sketches and part lists to the owner or farmer
Module 6: Maintenance, Troubleshooting & Sprinkler Basics
- Diagnose low pressure, uneven wetting, and clogged emitters
- Maintain filters, valves, and automation timers through the season
- Introduce micro-sprinkler and mini-sprinkler options where drip is unsuitable
- Record water applied per block to improve scheduling over time
Who This Is For
Minimum 12th pass or equivalent. Suitable for agriculture and horticulture students, drip installers and dealers, farm supervisors, nursery managers, landscape technicians, and entrepreneurs offering irrigation services. Comfort with basic measurements and field installation work is expected; prior drip experience is helpful but not mandatory.
Outcomes
On completion, you should be able to:
- Estimate crop water needs and choose drip components for a field block
- Design a simple layout with filtration and fertigation points
- Install, pressure-test, and commission a micro-irrigation system
- Maintain filters and emitters and troubleshoot common field faults
- Document layouts and operating notes for farmers or project clients
