Composting & Waste Management Technology

Learn how agricultural and organic waste can be scientifically converted into useful resources. Understand aerobic and anaerobic composting, vermicomposting, waste segregation, decomposition, earthworm management, compost quality, organic waste handling and small-scale unit planning. Develop practical skills for sustainable farming, horticulture, waste management and green entrepreneurship.

Level 03 – AIA. Agricultural Industry Advanced Certification Courses. Advanced Industry Skills for Agriculture & Horticulture Students.

This one-month course teaches how farm, garden, and kitchen organic wastes become stable compost and vermicompost under Indian conditions. You learn to balance carbon and nitrogen, manage moisture and aeration, and produce material that improves soil structure for horticulture, nurseries, and organic plots—while reducing open burning and landfill dependence at the community level.

Module 1: Waste Types, Segregation & Safety

  • Classify green, brown, and reject materials suitable for composting
  • Keep plastics, glass, and toxic residues out of organic streams
  • Use basic PPE and safe handling for sharp or wet waste
  • Size and store feedstock to prevent odour and pest problems

Module 2: Aerobic Composting Methods

  • Build pit, heap, and bin systems for small farms and institutions
  • Balance C:N ratio with crop residue, manure, and bulking agents
  • Turn or aerate piles to maintain temperature and oxygen
  • Recognise active, cooling, and maturation phases of decomposition

Module 3: Vermicomposting & Earthworm Management

  • Select epigeic earthworm species suited to local feedstock
  • Prepare beds or bins with correct moisture and pH for worms
  • Feed pre-decomposed material gradually to avoid heat stress
  • Harvest vermicompost and worm biomass without harming colonies

Module 4: Compost Quality & Maturity Testing

  • Judge maturity by colour, smell, temperature, and absence of original feedstock
  • Screen and cure compost before field or nursery application
  • Interpret simple nutrient and pathogen awareness for safe use
  • Label batches with date and source for traceability

Module 5: Small-Scale Unit Planning & Economics

  • Layout collection, processing, storage, and packaging areas
  • Estimate space, water, labour, and packaging for a micro-enterprise
  • Comply with local rules for waste handling where applicable
  • Explore sale to farmers, nurseries, and landscapers as organic input

Module 6: Application in Farming & Horticulture

  • Apply compost and vermicompost rates for vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals
  • Combine with mulching and reduced chemical fertilizer where appropriate
  • Use compost tea or extracts only with understood limitations
  • Link compost production to on-farm circular nutrient cycles

Who This Is For

Minimum 12th pass or equivalent. Suitable for farmers, horticulturists, nursery staff, municipal and campus green teams, SHG members, and entrepreneurs interested in compost or vermicompost units. Comfort with handling organic waste and outdoor work is expected; no prior composting experience is required.

Outcomes

On completion, you should be able to:

  • Segregate and prepare organic waste for aerobic or vermi systems
  • Operate pit, heap, or bed composting with correct turning and moisture
  • Maintain a productive vermicompost unit and harvest stable product
  • Test maturity and package compost for farm or nursery use
  • Outline a small composting unit layout and basic cost considerations
