Aromatic & Medicinal Plant Cultivation

Develop specialized knowledge in the cultivation and commercial management of aromatic and medicinal plants. Learn crop selection, propagation, nursery management, cultivation practices, irrigation, nutrition, harvesting, drying, primary processing and market considerations. Build skills relevant to herbal industries, essential-oil production, medicinal plant enterprises and commercial cultivation.

Level 03 – AIA. Agricultural Industry Advanced Certification Courses. Advanced Industry Skills for Agriculture & Horticulture Students.

Over two months you build a structured approach to aromatic and medicinal crops—from nursery to primary processing—using practices suited to Indian agro-climatic zones. Examples include lemongrass, mentha, tulsi, aloe, ashwagandha, and other species selected for local soil, water, and buyer requirements in herbal, cosmetic, and essential-oil supply chains.

Module 1: Crop Selection & Enterprise Planning

  • Compare aromatic, medicinal, and dual-purpose crops for your region and scale
  • Review quality traits buyers expect in dried herb and essential-oil markets
  • Outline land preparation, labour, and irrigation needs before planting
  • Keep simple field records for traceability and batch planning

Module 2: Propagation & Nursery Management

  • Use seed, cutting, division, and nursery-raised planting material as crop-appropriate
  • Prepare potting media and beds with sanitation to reduce disease carry-over
  • Harden seedlings before transplanting to the field or polyhouse
  • Schedule nursery batches to match transplanting windows and market demand

Module 3: Field Cultivation & Crop Care

  • Set spacing, ridges, and mulches for moisture conservation and weed control
  • Manage irrigation and drainage for active growth and essential-oil accumulation
  • Apply fertilizers and organic inputs based on crop stage and soil condition
  • Follow good agricultural practices for medicinal crops where applicable

Module 4: Pest, Disease & Quality in the Field

  • Scout regularly for pests and diseases that affect leaf and root quality
  • Prefer cultural and biological options compatible with herbal produce
  • Respect pre-harvest intervals when plant protection inputs are used
  • Reject contaminated or adulterated material from the harvest lot

Module 5: Harvesting, Drying & Primary Processing

  • Time harvest for peak active content and aroma in each crop type
  • Dry under shade or controlled conditions to protect colour and volatile oils
  • Clean, grade, and pack dried material to reduce mould and storage losses
  • Introduce distillation or extraction concepts where essential oils are the product

Module 6: Marketing & Value-Chain Awareness

  • Identify local aggregators, Ayurvedic units, and cosmetic manufacturers as buyers
  • Document batch weights, moisture, and basic quality checks for negotiations
  • Understand organic or certification pathways when targeting premium markets
  • Plan seasonal production to align with contract or spot-market opportunities
