Arboriculture & Professional Tree Care
Develop professional skills for the care, management and preservation of trees. Learn tree identification, planting, pruning, nutrition, irrigation, pest and disease management, tree risk assessment, support systems and maintenance practices. Build skills relevant to landscape companies, institutions, parks, residential projects and professional tree-care services.
Level 03 – AIA. Agricultural Industry Advanced Certification Courses. Advanced Industry Skills for Agriculture & Horticulture Students.
This two-month AIA program connects tree biology with field practice for planting, pruning, nutrition, and ongoing care. You build routines for identifying species, assessing tree condition, managing root zones and irrigation, and documenting maintenance for parks, campuses, residential landscapes, and professional tree-care work.
Module 1: Introduction to Arboriculture & Tree Biology
- Role of arboriculture in landscape, urban greening, and asset care
- Basic tree anatomy: roots, trunk, branches, and cambium
- How trees respond to wounding, drought, and compaction
- Safety, PPE, and site awareness before tree work
Module 2: Tree Identification & Species Selection
- Identify common landscape and avenue trees using form, bark, and foliage
- Match species to climate, soil, and intended use
- Consider mature size, root habit, and clearance needs
- Document species lists for planting plans and maintenance schedules
Module 3: Planting, Pit Preparation & Establishment
- Assess planting sites for drainage, utilities, and space
- Prepare pits, handle root balls, and set correct planting depth
- Staking, guying, and mulching during establishment
- Initial watering and aftercare for the first growing seasons
Module 4: Pruning, Canopy & Structural Management
- Pruning objectives: clearance, structure, health, and aesthetics
- Young-tree training and removal of conflicting branches
- Crown thinning, raising, and reduction concepts for mature trees
- Tool selection, clean cuts, and wound management basics
Module 5: Tree Nutrition, Irrigation & Root-Zone Care
- Read soil and mulch conditions around tree root zones
- Fertiliser timing and placement suited to tree age and species
- Irrigation methods for establishment and drought stress
- Reduce compaction and protect roots during construction nearby
Module 6: Pest, Disease & Disorder Recognition
- Spot common foliar, bark, and root-related symptoms on trees
- Distinguish biotic damage from environmental stress
- Cultural and hygiene steps to reduce pest and disease pressure
- When to escalate to a specialist or licensed applicator
Module 7: Risk Assessment, Support Systems & Maintenance
- Visual tree assessment for defects, decay, and target hazards
- Cabling, bracing, and propping concepts for selected cases
- Seasonal maintenance calendars for institutional and public trees
- Site records for inspections, work done, and client handover
